Moon, Venus, Mercury, July 24, 2014. As dawn was breaking on this summer morning the Moon, Venus and Mercury made a fine gathering in the eastern sky. The Moon was a thin crescent with only about 6 percent illumination showing from the Sun, and a lovely glow of earthshine on its shadow side. Venus is nearby shining brightly. The elusive planet Mercury is also visible (although much dimmer than Venus) in the gap between the clouds to the lower left. The photograph was taken near my home at 5:04 EDT. Georgian Bay is beyond the row of trees. There's a serene beauty to nature at this time of day as the landscape slowly comes back to life after the night.
This photograph was featured on the SkyNews Magazine website as their Photo of the Week, and published in the magazine's Sept./Oct. 2015 edition.
