Aurora and Star Trails, October 8, 2013. This evening had one of the better aurora displays in recent months. I took numerous single image photographs of the activity, and then as the display was beginning to quiet down I set up my camera and took a sequence of images to record a full hour of action in the northern sky.
The green and red colours in the sky are produced by the aurora. The star trails show the apparent movement of the stars in the sky during the one hour of image capture. Every now and then a car would pass by to the lower right on a nearby country road. The headlights lit up the autumn colours in the trees.
This photograph was featured in the April 2014 edition of Astronomy Magazine.
