northern lights

Aurora, June 1b, 2013. In the early hours of June 1st I was surprised to see an active aurora display in our northern sky. The Sun is carefully monitored for possible interactions with Earth's magnetic field with orbiting and land based telescopes, but this particular event was not predicted. Perhaps a small coronal mass ejection went undetected. In any case, the display of northern lights this night was one of the best I've observed in a long time. Pulsating flashes of light shimmered across the sky. Starting at midnight I was outside taking photographs for over two hours from the middle of a field across the road from my home on the Bruce Peninsula. This photograph was taken at 1:30 a.m. It was also featured on the SkyNews Magazine website as a Photo of the Week.

A photograph taken at 1:04 a.m. is available here, and photograph taken at 2:13 a.m. is available here.
