northern lights

Aurora, May 8, 2016. Although a major aurora event hadn't been predicted I did notice some increased aurora activity in satellite images late on the evening of May 7th. I checked the northern sky again in the middle of the night, and sure enough there were nice curtains of colour forming up, so I headed out with my camera and tripod.

I took this image from the field in front of our home in rural southern Ontario at 4:17 a.m. EDT. Aurora activity has been rather subdued the past couple of years, so it was great to see this fine display.

This photograph was featured in the December 2016 issue of Sky & Telescope magazine.
