Aurora

Aurora, September 3, 2008. The gentle glow of this aurora seems rather subdued when compared to some of the dramatic displays four or five years earlier. But it's been a year and a half since I've been able to photograph any aurora at all, so even a quiet show is welcome. Activity on the Sun triggers aurora, and it has been at solar minimum for the past year. The Sun is showing signs of increased activity now, and we can expect more frequent aurora in the years ahead.

The red light of a communications tower about 20 km to the north has lit up the underside of the low clouds.
