Aurora, Fireflies, Moon, June 23, 2015. Sometimes different events seem to converge at one time to make for a memorable experience. This is what happened on the night of June 22/23 2015 when we not experienced one of the best aurora displays in over a decade, but also the peak of our local firefly season, and a lovely crescent Moon setting behind thin clouds.
This photograph was taken in the field in front of my home looking west as the Moon set. The northern lights flickered above, and fireflies flashed all around me in the field. The greenish-yellow strokes of light on the lower part of the photograph are fireflies.
This photograph was taken at 12:07 a.m. An image taken a few minutes later facing north is available here.
